It's Always Nice to Share a Pint with Friends

On Tuesday, five Pushing7 staff members participated in New Self Renewal Center's first blood drive for the American Red Cross as a part of their Live Life, Give Life campaign. The group ran the gamut from first-timers to seasoned donors, but we all had the same mission - to do something to give back to an organization that helps save lives every day.

Kirk donating bloodGiving blood is especially important to our fearless leaders here at Pushing7. Suzi's husband and the president of our parent company, Qualtim, has received blood twice in his life. Kirk received blood for the first time in 1985 during a serious bout of peritonitis and again in 2002 when he lost 11 units to a duodenal ulcer. Needless to say, they are well aware of the life-saving importance of the Red Cross and those who donate blood on a regular basis.

While donating was old hat to some of us, Molly and I finally put on our big girl panties and mustered the courage to give blood for the first time. We were both pleasantly surprised by how easy and painless the process was and look forward to participating in future drives. Ben gave a double red donation for the first time in his long history as a donor and was pleased to do twice the good in about the same amount of time.

Overall, the four-hour drive collected 23 units of blood, which the Red Cross translates into 69 lives saved - pretty cool for about an hour of one's time! New Self will plan future blood drives, so stay tuned for your opportunity to participate sometime this fall.

If you're on the fence, consider the following:

  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
  • The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
  • More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
  • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

The Red Cross website is a great resource for all of your questions about giving blood. So check it out and then consider signing up for a blood drive near you. You never know when the person needing blood might be someone you love.

Live Life. Give Life. Thank you!
